A 2:1 scaled-up model of the Kyoto-NTN magnetically suspended impeller centrifugal blood pump(MSCBP)selecting water and aqueous Xanthan gum solutions as working fluid was designed and tested. The results show that the present model pump performances are similar to those of the prototype
and it is better for similarity to replace blood with aqueous Xanthan gum solution than with water. It is noted that at lower concentration of solutions
the critical Reynolds number or rotary speed measured in the present pump coincides with the design value; in contrast
an obvious effect of non-Newtonian behavior on the dynamic similarity design and the measured value is extremely lower than the design value at high concentration.
