A theoretical model of solar chimney power plant(SCPP)considering the system irreversible losses is presented to study the relationship between the geometrical parameters and the output power of the SCPP. Firstly
the proposed theoretical model is verified with the experimental data of Manzanares SCPP in Spain. Results show that the model predicts the system output power well
and the output power of the system is overestimated by about 24% without taking the irreversible losses of the system into account. Then
the model is used to analyze the sensitivity parameters of the heat collection shed radius and the height and radius of the chimney. The results show that when the radius of the heat collection shed increases to an inflection point
the construction cost still increases approximately linearly
but the performance of the system does not change appreciably. Increasing the chimney height is more helpful to improve the output power and thermal efficiency of the system than increasing the collector radius. When the chimney radius increases to a certain extent
the output power of the system tends to be stable
the updraft velocity keeps decreasing
but the mass flow rate of the system increases significantly. Finally
by using a genetic algorithm
multi-objective structural optimization programs of the SCPP are developed based the proposed theoretical model and the building cost model. Structural optimization of the Manzanares pilot power plant shows that the optimized total construction cost is 2.47 times that of the prototype
but the output power is 3.91 times that of the prototype. The research results can provide theoretical guidance for the design of the SCPP.
