The existing matching algorithm of fracture surfaces is mainly suitable for rough surfaces with rich features but not for smooth surfaces with rare features. To solve this problem
an algorithm based on contour curve is proposed for fracture surfaces matching. Firstly
the algorithm combines region growing algorithm and boundary tracking algorithm for surface segmentation and contour extraction simultaneously. Next
the contour matching includes rough matching based on the corner point distance matrix
which can eliminate most of the dissimilar contour pairs
and fine matching based on Hausdorff distance according to the curvatures and torsions of all contour curve vertices. Finally
the quaternion method is used to calculate rigid transformation based on contour pairs. The optimal matching is the fragment pairs which satisfy the cross-boundary continuity detection and have minimum errors. We use a variety of rough and smooth fracture surfaces of different materials to test the algorithm. Experimental results show that the algorithm can achieve better matching of fracture surfaces with rare or abundant features.
