To obtain accurate and objective runout evaluations of bevel gears on coordinate measurement machines(CMMs)
a new runout measurement strategy by pitch deviation was put forward. The model of measured bevel gear was established via replacing the theoretical tooth surface with quadric surface
the diameter of imaginary ball probe was determined by the tangent plane method
the mathematical model for virtual measurement was constructed by pitch deviation
and hence the runout was determined by solving the system equations governing the tangent contact relation between the probe and the tooth surface of the measured gear. A case of hypoid pinion indicates that the variation in the runout iterations gets less than one-tenth of the tolerance value of grade one for the measured bevel gear
