An experimental investigation on friction pressure drop of aqueous Xanthan gum solutions in a horizontal pipe with an inside diameter of 25 mm was conducted. Measurements were performed and the generalized Reynolds numbers of laminar-turbulent transition were calculated according to the definition by Metzner-Reed at 15 ℃ and 20 ℃ for the solution concentrations of 0.04%
0.06%
0.1%
and 0.2%
respectively. It is found that the critical generalized Reynolds number of laminar-turbulent transition increases with the solution concentration
and a correlation between the critical Reynolds number and the solution concentration can be derived. In the laminar flow region the Fanning friction factor is linearly dependent on the generalized Reynolds number
and the friction factor chart resembles that of Newtonian fluid. In the turbulent flow region
however
distinct drag reduction can be observed
and it increases with the increase of solution concentration.
