Experiments on the dynamic performance of an air source heat pump(ASHP)unit with split fin-tube heat exchangers were conducted under frosting conditions. The frost thickness on the evaporator was measured with a microscope. The experimental results indicate that in the initial frosting stage
the growth rate of the frost thickness on the split fin-tube heat exchanger was much greater than that on the plane fin-tube heat exchanger
and thus the frosting duration shortened significantly. Under low air relative humidity conditions
there was a period during which the frost thickness on the split fin-tube evaporator was almost invariable
leading to a longer frosting duration. Unlike the ASHP unit with the plane fin-tube evaporator
the heating capacity and the coefficient of performance of the ASHP unit with the split fin-tube evaporator decreased significantly with the increase of the air relative humidity.
