A new approach was proposed which embeds a PI controller in computational fluid dynamics(CFD)mode to reduce time consumption and cost in physical fluid experiments. The plants controlled are simulated by commercial CFD software-FLUENT
and control algorithms are incorporated into the CFD model with its User-Defined Functions(UDF). To examine the performance of the new method
an internal temperature field nonlinear control of a hot and cool water mixer was explored for PI controller design. The results show that the system performance could be obtained without implementing physical experiment. Moreover
the character of each point in the entire field could be understood and thus the distributed controller could be designed by this approach. It appears that the present method is feasible in the controller design for systems involving fluid flow and heat transfer.
