and the structure and optical properties of resultant Zn
1-x
Co
x
O were investigated by X-ray diffraction
UV-vis absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. The results indicate that ZnO nanocrystal is endowed with a hexagonal wurtzite structure following the replacement of Zn
2+
by Co
2+
into the lattice. UV-vis absorption spectra show a red shift of optical band gap(E
g
)with increasing doping concentration. Moreover
three characteristic absorption peaks appear around 567
600 and 656 nm in the absorption spectra. UV band(384 nm)
blue-green band(440 nm)and green band(~490 nm)are observed in the photoluminescence spectra for all samples. Co
2+
doping can cause reduction in the intensity of photoluminescence emission due to accumulation of local states at th
e interface and nonradiative recombination. This quenching effect is enhanced with the increase of Co doping density.
