The Co-doped CaO nanopowder was prepared by solid-state synthesis method. The structural and magnetic properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy studies show single-phase cubic CaO and distinct contraction of the lattice with Co doping
indicating an actual incorporation of Co ions into the CaO lattice. The magnetic studies show that the Co-doped CaO nanopowder displays a clear ferromagnetism behavior with the critical temperature higher than 70 K. The analysis suggests that the ferromagnetism is induced by the bound magnetic polarons due to O vacancies and Co ions coupling.
