A thin-body acoustic boundary element method was applied to predict the aerodynamic noise from a centrifugal fan considering the scattering effect of volute casing. The method can reduce computational cost because its coefficient matrix is smaller than that of conventional methods. The turbulent inner field was computed by solving the unsteadyReynolds averaged N-S equations with k-ε turbulence model. The time accurate acoustic source was transformed to the frequency dependent signals. The thin-body boundary element method was used to predict the aerodynamic tonal noise. The calculated sound pressure levels were compared with the experimental data. The result shows that the calculated sound pressure levels(SPLs)agree well with the experimental data in blade passing frequency and its second harmonic
but the SPLs at high frequency are not well predicted.
