20% and 85% of ethanol in volume respectively were prepared to investigate the effects of ethanol/gasoline blends(gasohol)on engine unregulated emissions. A multiple-point injection gasoline engine was applied in the experiment and the unregulated emissions were detected by a gas chromatography with a pulsed discharge helium ionization detector. The performance of a three-way catalytic converter(TWC)was examined. The experimental results show that the emissions of formaldehyde
acetaldehyde and ethanol increased with the increase of ethanol ratio in E10 and E20. The emission of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde from the engine with E85 increased slightly
about 1.6 and 2.4 times as large as that with E0
respectively
while the emission of ethanol was about 35 times as large as that with E10. The emission of acetaldehyde increased with the load
and the ethanol emission from the engine with E10 or E20 decreased but that with E85 increased slightly with the increase in the load. The conversion efficiency of aldehyde and ethanol emissions with TWC was above 75% while the conversion efficiency of formaldehyde emission from the engine with E20 or E85 was less than 30%.
