The characteristics and the effects of ignition timing on methanol(CH
3
OH)and formaldehyde(HCHO)emissions of a spark ignition(SI)engine fueled with gasoline and M10(10% of methanol in blend by volume)blend respectively were experimentally investigated with gas chromatography(equipped with a helium ionization detector
HID). Results show that
CH
3
OH emission was the unburnt part of fuel methanol
and it was greatly affected by the maximum in-cylinder temperature and decreased with engine speed and exhaust temperature while HCHO emission increased with them. HCHO was mainly formed in the exhaust pipe. HCHO emission from the gasoline engine increased first and then decreased with the increase in the engine torque. In addition
at middle and high engine load
HCHO emission from the M10 engine was 1.5-4.5 times that from the gasoline engine
and
their HCHO emissions were close at high engine speeds.
