A new method is proposed to quantitatively analyze the motion errors of a typical closed hydrostatic guideway with four pads. The average film thickness is defined and the film reaction force variation is evaluated. A practical design is analyzed by the method
and the averaging coefficients with respect to profile error components with different wavelength are calculated. It is shown that the wavelength of profile error components
the length of the pad and the evaluation range of the motion straightness are the main influencing factors on the averaging effect of hydrostatic guideways. The ratio of pad length to motion straightness evaluation range ought to be optimized to make the averaging effect be more significant in a wider wavelength range of the profile error component
so as to improve the hydrostatic guideway precision and lower fabricating difficulty.
