Flow visualization experiments of different fluid-nitrogen co-current upward flow were conducted in a square channel with a hydraulic diameter of 2.5 mm. Three kinds of fluids were studied
i.e.
water
saccharose
and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC). The typical flow patterns of different gases at liquid superficial velocities were recognized
including slug flow
churn flow
and annular flow. Flow visualization experiments on saccharose-nitrogen co-current upward flow were also carried out in a square channel with a hydraulic diameter of 1.0 mm. The flow regime maps and the pressure drop of the working fluids were obtained according to the plentiful experimental data. Flow mechanism in each flow pattern was discussed and the main factors affecting flow pattern were explored
in particular
the influence of the viscosity and the fluid flux. The results show that the surface tension
secondary flow
and hydraulic diameter have significant effect on the flow pattern transition. The experiment with the hydraulic diameter of 2.5 mm indicates that the Chisholm method may not suit the non-Newtonian fluid.
