A 4-cylinder port fuel injection(PFI)engine fueled with four methanol-gasoline blends was used to study the emission characteristics during the cold start process at different ambient temperatures(-25 ℃
-15 ℃
-7 ℃
5 ℃
and 15 ℃). The results show that the regulated emissions(HC
CO)were greatly reduced by methanol addition at all the test ambient temperatures. The average HC emission of the engine increased exponentially with the decrease in the ambient temperature
however
its change would gradually turn to be linear with the increase in the methanol fraction. When the methanol fraction in volume was over 30%
the reduction of HC emission would not be obvious. The variation of the average CO emission with the ambient temperature was different from that of the average HC emission. When the ambient temperature decreased from 5 ℃ to -7 ℃
the CO emiss
ion increased dramatically for the four fuels
however
the average CO emission did not change significantly with the further decrease in the temperature. In addition
the unregulated emissions(HCHO
CH
3
OH)would increase with the decrease in ambient temperature and with the increase in the methanol fraction.
