A sliding vane expander was designed to replace the throttling valve used in the energy recovery systems with HFCs. Its performance and the coefficient of performance(COP)of the refrigeration system were tested. The experimental results show that the prototype operated in the HFC410A refrigeration system continuously and steadily. Under the air-conditioning conditions
the volumetric ratio of HFC410A reached 7.48 in the expansion process. The prototype had the volumetric efficiency of 20.58% with the maximum isentropic efficiency of 20.26%. When springs were installed at the bottom of the vane
the volumetric efficiency and isentropic efficiency increased to 44.27% and 32.07%
respectively. The COP was 3.59 and rose by 6.49% compared with that of a throttling valve system. In addition
the optimum rotation speed range of the sliding vane expander was 1 100-1 200 r/min.
